How to Transfer Your BNY Mellon Accounts Into Your Trust

Most BNY Mellon investment and wealth management accounts can be retitled into your trust by completing a change of ownership request. Follow these steps to begin the process.

1. Reach Out to Your BNY Mellon Advisor

  • Contact your BNY Mellon Wealth Management Advisor or Client Service team.

  • Let them know you would like to transfer your eligible accounts into your trust.

  • Ask them to provide the required trust transfer paperwork.

2. Gather Your Trust Documents

  • Have a copy of your Certification of Trust or Trust Certification available.

  • If requested, provide a complete copy of your trust agreement.

  • BNY Mellon may request additional documentation depending on the account type.

3. Complete the Required Forms

  • Fill out all paperwork provided by BNY Mellon.

  • If your trust has more than one trustee, all required trustees may need to sign.

4. Return Your Paperwork

  • Submit the completed forms and supporting documents using the instructions provided by your advisor or client service representative.

  • Keep copies of everything you submit for your records.

5. Verify the Transfer

  • Confirm that your eligible accounts have been retitled into the name of your trust.

  • Review your updated account statements or request written confirmation once the transfer is complete.

Additional Information

  • Retirement accounts, including IRAs and 401(k)s, are generally not transferred into a trust. Instead, review your beneficiary designations to ensure they align with your estate plan.

  • Some account types may have additional requirements or may not be eligible for trust ownership.

  • If you have questions about whether an account should be transferred into your trust, consult your estate planning attorney before proceeding.
