Trust Administration
Trust administration involves the legal and practical steps a trustee takes to manage and distribute trust assets according to the trust document and applicable law, including identifying and securing trust property, notifying beneficiaries and creditors, paying valid debts and taxes, investing and safeguarding assets prudently, keeping accurate records and providing required accountings, and ultimately distributing remaining assets to beneficiaries; throughout the process the trustee must act in the beneficiaries’ best interests, avoid conflicts of interest, follow fiduciary duties, and seek court guidance when disputes or uncertainties arise.
