How to Transfer Your Morgan Stanley Accounts Into Your Trust

To complete your estate plan, you will need to retitle your eligible Morgan Stanley accounts into the name of your trust. Follow the steps below:

  1. Contact Morgan Stanley

    • Call your Morgan Stanley Financial Advisor or local Morgan Stanley office.

    • Tell them you would like to transfer your accounts into your trust (sometimes called a change of registration or trust account registration).

  2. Request the Required Forms

    • Ask Morgan Stanley for the paperwork needed to retitle your accounts into the trust.

    • Verify whether any additional account-specific forms are required.

  3. Provide Trust Documentation

    • Submit a copy of your Trust Certification or Certification of Trust.

    • If requested, provide a complete copy of the trust agreement.

  4. Complete and Sign the Paperwork

    • Fill out all Morgan Stanley forms accurately.

    • If your trust has multiple trustees, all required trustees may need to sign.

  5. Submit the Documents

    • Return the completed forms and supporting documents to Morgan Stanley.

    • Your Financial Advisor can typically assist with the submission process.

  6. Confirm the Transfer

    • Review updated account statements to ensure the accounts are titled in the name of your trust.

    • Request written confirmation if it is not automatically provided.

  7. Keep Copies for Your Records

    • Save copies of all submitted paperwork.

    • Store updated account statements with your estate planning documents.

Important Notes

  • Retirement accounts (such as IRAs and 401(k)s) are generally not retitled into a trust. Instead, review and update beneficiary designations if appropriate.

  • Some account types may have additional requirements or may not be eligible for trust ownership.

  • If you are unsure whether a particular account should be transferred into your trust, consult your estate planning attorney before completing the transfer.
